Leaving airport during layover in Toronto?

Hi all,

I'm flying to Europe ~2 weeks from now, but I have a little over 13h layover in Toronto. My first idea was to just hang out in the airport for the duration, but I feel like I'll just have extra nervous energy being cooped up in a terminal all day.

Despite being Canadian, I haven't (in my adult life) seen Toronto, so it would be nice to leave the airport via the rail that runs from the airport. I am not bringing luggage with me (only carry-on), but would consider leaving my carry-on in storage and just bringing my purse into the city.

However, I'm worried about making my flight. I arrive early in the morning prior to 9am and will be leaving after 9pm. Would leaving the airport, heading back around 3, be a bad idea? If so, does anyone have any recommendations on places to see in downtown TO?
