Car rental for two month round road trip SF to SF. First time we've done something like this so we're apprehensive about what to go for. Is an SUV worth it? Should we just stick with economy? Which companies would you recommend?
Before I start, a few details, it will just be the two of us, my girlfriend and I, and we'll both be sharing the driving. We're from the UK.
We'll be starting mid-August and finishing mid-October. Here is an outline of our current route map. This route is nowhere near finalised though but it's a basic outline we may want to follow. Got to start somewhere!
We plan on starting in San Francisco though, not Seattle, so ignore the numbers, and of course we'll be finishing there too after doing the route clockwise.
So...!
We've been looking on SkyScanner and Kayak. There're just so many options. Average prices seem to be around $1400 - $2000 for the 8 weeks.
We've been thinking of paying that little extra to get a small SUV instead too. We feel it'd be more comfortable and the higher ride gives nice visibility and the bigger car gives a bit more space. Is this worthwhile do you think?
The idea of going for the cheapest economy option is tempting, but maybe being in a tiny car for two months isn't ideal?
Should we rent from within the city or at the airport? Doing some research, everyone seems to think renting from the airport is a bad thing but we've seen some cheaper prices there so we're not too sure. I like the idea of renting from within the city though. Driving straight after an 11 hour flight isn't ideal.
Is it recommended to book directly through a major rental company such as Alamo, Avis, Hertz etc.? Or is booking through a third party no problem?
The only thing I'm sure on is that I want a full-to-full fuel policy!
Again, I know it's a lot of questions, but car rental is a big chunk of any budget and we want to make sure we're making the right decision.
Any tips, answers, or input would be greatly appreciated and thank you very much in advance!
