Anybody been through Central Asia (and Iran or Xinjiang) before?
I'm planning to backpack the silk road this Summer (specifically China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Iran)! And I was wondering if there were other solo travellers with experience and advice for these countries!
I'm worried by how safe things will be for someone travelling solo in this part of the world, and whether the adventures that seem easy for a group to put together (like horseback riding, or mountain trekking) would even be accessible to someone who's not bringing any partners.
More than that, this would be my first time backpacking solo. Everything that I've heard about from the friends and the net on how easy it is to make friends on the road feels like it would apply more to places like Southeast Asia or South America, as opposed to Central Asia, which doesn't seem like it'd be at the top of most peoples' travel lists. Is extended loneliness something I'll just have to learn how to deal with on this route?
If you've been through these areas (not necessarily these issues), I'd love to talk to you about your experiences!
I've been getting some conflicting information from travel sites and reddit on how open to tourists and travellers Central Asia is. The last thread on /r/solotravel on central asia has been really helpful with suggestions like caravanistan and visas, but I'd love to get some firsthand answers too!
