Travelling in the EU before and after Student Visa
I plan on studying abroad in Germany for a semester in Fall 2018, and I'll apply for a student visa to do so. This visa would last 3 months, so no problem on that end. The only complication is that I plan on travelling through the EU both before and after the term of my German student visa. Probably around 2 months throughout Southern/Eastern Europe over the summer and a couple of weeks in Spain in December. The two months would also involve extensive travelling to and from Balkan states, meaning I would frequently be entering and exiting the Schengen area. How much trouble do you think I'd run into by entering/exiting the EU over the period of >3 months with a US passport if 3 of those months would be spent residing in Germany under a student visa and the travel before and after that period would total <3 months?
I know the German consulate would be the best place to ask, and I still plan asking them. However, based on my experiences with other foreign consulates, I'll probably get stuck in a long/endless loop of referrals.
