Maya Bay to shut down for four months every year
Main points:
-
Maya Bay, the beach from the movie The Beach, will be closed starting this June for four months (and annually thereafter) to allow the area to recover from the hordes of tourists that visit it daily.
-
Once it re-opens, visitors will be limited to 2,000 per day (down from the 4,000 that visit it now) and boats will no longer be allowed to anchor there.
-
Tourism numbers in Thailand have skyrocketed from 10 million in 2000 to 35 million in 2017.
I've been to Thailand twice but have never been to Maya Bay. It just looked too touristy, plus the environmental damage caused by so many visitors. Even the movie's production fucked up the beach. It literally took a tsunami to restore it to its natural state. Glad to hear the Thai government is doing something to preserve it.
