Backpacking SEA at the moment! Some of my initial thoughts!
I posted a couple times on this sub asking for advice like many others preparing for south east asia, which helped a lot but I always liked to read actual experiences people had so I'm writing some of mine so far. I have never solo traveled or been to south east asia, and I'm from the U.S.
I started in Bangkok and took the train to the hostel, which was quite easy as the train system is just like two paths I took, and there are maps everywhere. Once i got to the hostel, I immediately met another guy who was staying in the same room as I and also just checked in. We spent around 3-4 days together along with many other people, so I was never really alone, which was fine with me! It's definitely more fun when you can find someone else to go with you, so if I've had any trouble, i just stayed in the common area until another person showed up and talked for a minute and planned the day. There's a lot of people who sit in common areas just looking at their phones which was me as well, and it took a few days to realize, they are in the same exact situation, but haven't found anyone to hang out with yet, so it's incredibly easy to just spark up a conversation about your journeys. After Bangkok I took a flight to Chiang mai and also quickly met a guy at the next hostel who was on the same flight so we are still traveling together and taking the bus to Pai soon. I'm still kind of conflicted about continuing the journey even though there are some really awesome people along the way which you could spend more time with. There are nice people everywhere though.
So those are just my initial thoughts and please feel free to ask questions, and thank you to all who replied to my posts before.
