Advice on spontaneous 10 day SF<->Denver road trip?
Buddy has been going through a rough time and spontaneously decided he wanted to do a road trip and visit some old friends in Denver during spring break. It'll just be us two and neither of us know what to expect, but we don't mind long driving days and we also would love to see some awesome scenery! Neither of us are experienced campers so it's probably better if we stop at motels rather than try camping for the first time at national parks with less than a week to prepare... unless we can sleep in the car at a park...? Or are there national forests along the way?
We also don't know whether to take a route upwards through Tahoe, or downwards through Vegas (what we're currently leaning towards on basis of things like Zion National Park, Grand Junction, etc.), and whether on our way back it's better to take a similar route or not. We heard good things about I-70, but honestly all the advice/resources out there is a little overwhelming. I think we want to spend 2 or 3 days in Denver. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: Would also appreciate favorite road trip songs! I really like "The Way It Was" by The Killers :-)
