I'm travelling solo through New Zealand and I won't have a car for the North Island portion but have been able to figure out a bus pattern that works for me. I will be going through in the middle of May so Tongariro is a no-go.

Wondering if anyone who has been to these two places can give me some advice on which deserves more time.

I like hiking and nature but I also like meeting new people at hostels and bar hopping. I'm leaning towards Taupo, but I'm not sure if theres enough to keep me occupied there for that long without a car. Thinking of renting a bike through the hostel when I'm there.
