Tips for American traveling to UK for 2-3 weeks with as little money as possible
I plan on travelling all over the UK in the summer (possibly departing May 1st) for general sightseeing/photography and hanging with locals. First time traveling outside of America.
Note: I don't care about having a "good" vacation by American standards. I would (and have) traveled across America for weeks on end on a few hundred dollars on top of gas. I want to meet good people and see pretty things, not go to shops and tourist sites and trot around big cities for two weeks looking at my phone.
Questions:
Any tips on where to stay? I would use couchsurfing apps primarily. That failing, I'd find the cheapest airbnbs and hostels, but I don't know what the average cost is in the UK (in America it's roughly $80/night). The only consideration is not getting mugged outside my room, but even then I'd still consider it for a dirt cheap rate.
Where should I go? I don't mind going randomly and spontaneously about the country, but particularly beautiful places and particularly good people (with accents I don't need an interpreter for) are ideal. I will plan my trip around that.
How shall I get around, and how much would it cost depending on what I do? I'm considering renting a car just to get around. If I can find a place to stay, that would be great; if not, I'll have my hammock. An alternative would be renting a van and staying in that for the duration. Downside here is fuel cost, which apparently is far more expensive than the U.S. Also, I'm admittedly afraid of not being able to get used to driving on the opposite side of the road and obeying foreign traffic laws. Perhaps public transportation + renting a scooter would be ideal.
Food costs? I'm not opposed to buying fruits and vegetables from the market and eating McDonald's for two weeks. If I stay anywhere with a stove I can save money and have relatively better food quality by buying at a grocery store and cooking for myself.
How should I dress? I'm told the temperature all around isn't bad in the summer, but perhaps I should be prepared for rainy weather.
ALSO: I would literally plan my entire trip around pubs with decent blues jams. It's not a top consideration but it very well could turn into one. I'll have my electric guitar with me the whole time.
Any tips would be appreciated. If I've missed anything I ought to consider, please let me know. Thank you!
