The Joys (and perils) of Airbnb for Solo Travelers?
I'm embarking on my first solo trip in April/May. I'm fairly well traveled but, except for 10 days in London when I stayed with a local friend, it has all been small (3) or large (50+) group travel.
Its obvious from going through this sub that most people opt for hostels whether for the social aspect or budgetary reasons. I'm sure there are others here that have used alternative lodgings such as Airbnb.
What I want to know is, What is your experience renting rooms with Airbnb as a solo traveler?
Did you get an entire apartment or a private room? What was the interaction like? Have any good stories? Have any bad experiences?
I like the idea of renting a room to get that kind of "casa particular" experience but am also concerned that exchanging the social safety net of the hostel environment for the semi-privacy of Airbnb may leave me on a proverbial island. Also, Airbnb private rooms and hostels are comparable in price in the places I am traveling.
