solotrip in march, too indecisive abt where to go (thinking castle-focsed or scandanavia)...advice?
hey all. i'm 27/f and recently had a lot of free time thrust into my life, as well as a good amount of money. this summer i am going to italy and greece with a friend, but i am itching to do a solo trip somewhere in march, with the length of time TBD but leaning towards 2/3 weeks (since the summer trip will likely be longer). i am a huge history buff-- i love late middle-ages/post medieval history in particular, but i've also been thinking about scandanavia for quite some time. so i've come to you guys in hopes you can point me in the right direction.
for the scandanavia trip:
-
stockholm
-
ice hotel in northern sweden
-
helsinki
-
estonia via ferry for day/overnight trip
-
(back to) helsinki in order to fly home
that's a rough guess of my itinerary but you get the idea i hope. i wanted to go to oslo too but since it's not going to be a super long trip, i'd prefer to keep it to 3 locations max, with the estonia outing not really "counting" towards that. again, i don't know how many days in each location, hopefully you guys could help me with that? i would like 3 days in ice hotel with 2 nights being in a cold room, but other than that everything else tbd.
while i have obviously given that trip a lot of thought, it came about bc i saw some steals of airfare a few weeks ago, before i knew my budget. since i have a larger budget now, airfare doesn't really matter, and therefore i've started perusing travel advisor...oops...too many places i want to visit and can't decide :(!!
my other idea for a trip is to try and do a "castle" tour of europe. i don't have a good itinerary idea for this, and i don't know if i should just stick to castles in the UK for simplicity or if i should try to fit other places like neuschwanstein castle in there. i would probably base myself in scotland, because they have so many damn castles, and i've been dying to go to the highlands -- i love remote, moorish landscapes in general. what are the best castles to tour? something of note: i enjoy meeting people at bars and such and staying out late but i'm not a big drinker (infact i don't really drink at all).
TLDR; should i go to stockholm, ice hotel, helsinki, estonia, OR should i do a tour of castles in the UK w/ maybe a trip out to germany to see neuschwanstein? re: castles, i would love suggestions and to know people's favorite castles they've visited (even if outside the uk!). any opinions or advice are extremely helpful :) dates are flexible, but ideally end of march/early april, for 2-3 weeks. budget isn't super high but high enough for a short trip like this. i hope this type of post is allowed, if not please let me know how i can correct it. thank you so much.
EDIT: sorry should have def included this -- my budget for stuff outside of airfare is around 3k, 4k for scandanavia if i do ice hotel shit. if that amount isn't feasible for scandanavia then def going to be doing a castle tour. i've been scouring online for price points and budgeting (for both trip ideas) but i've seen a mix of responses so just wanted people's personal experiences.
