What to do with finances and phone whilst abroad?

Hi all,

I'm planning to solo travel or at least travel for a few months starting in the summer. I have no concrete plans and I haven't booked anything but I plan to visit a few countries namely Vietnam, Japan and North/South America.

This will be my first solo trip and although I'm excited I also want to be as prepared as possible and one thing that is worrying me in the build up to the trip is handling my finances and my phone. In visiting so many countries with different currencies and mobile networks I'm confused as to what to do.

I currently have a HSBC account in the UK where my money is saved and have one debit card. I see a lot of suggestions saying I should have more than one card so would it be wise to open another account? Additionally, how could I get around fees incurred by withdrawing or paying in foreign currency? Finally, what would you suggest regarding mobile phones? Would I buy a local sim card for every country I visit? The only thing that worries me is that if I replace my sim card it will wipe all my contacts and everything from home.

Sorry if I sound like an amateur but I really want to fulfil this trip and be as prepared as possible. Thanks!
