Thinking about going to Switzerland/Italy in May for a concert. First timer here - any suggestions?
Hi all!
I live in the US, and have traveled internationally a few times. I have been to South America with my family as a teenager, and I've been up to Canada solo a few times as well. However, I want to really broaden my horizons and try Switzerland and Italy in the same trip.
I am looking at going to see pianist Ludovico Einaudi play in Zurich. Concert tickets are still pretty reasonable, as it is months away. I've already looked up weather conditions in Switzerland, and it looks like May is a FANTASTIC time to go! Also, I looked up other posts here regarding Switzerland, and it looks like other users have been advised to fly into other nearby cities and maybe take a train. I'll do a lot more research on this in order to make an educated decision, but I'd love to hear any pointers regarding how to actually get to Zurich in a cost efficient manner.
My ideal trip would be 10 days long - Leave on a Friday, concert is Sunday evening, and then spend the rest of that upcoming week exploring what I can before heading back to the US Friday evening/Saturday morning. I'd like to see multiple cities while there (while still being reasonable - I don't want to rush any one place), and I'd prefer to fly out from a coastal city. I can hop on a train to Milan, and from there take another train to Venice, Genoa, etc. I'd prefer to leave from Italy, but if anyone has any outstanding arguments for southern France, I'd be happy to listen :)
For those who have traveled in these areas: Do you have any immediate advice? Is Switzerland too pretty in May to only be there for half of the time? Are certain parts of Italy more travel-friendly than others? How amazing is the food??
Side note - I'm still figuring out my budget (I know, I know), but I know I will not be pinching pennies during this trip. That being said, I obviously want to save money wherever possible, and I'm looking into hostels now in the cities that interest me the most. My game plan is still pretty loose, and I wanted to crowd source some of this information if possible, and learn anything necessary/interesting/important!
