Looking to travel to New Zealand for a year from Canada.
As the title suggests, I want to move to New Zealand for a year. My primary cause of this is to be able to relax, find a new light in social interaction, hike, and over all just experience new things out of my norm at the same time as not throw myself under the bus financially. I am 23, will be 24 when i move, and am fairly new to traveling. So naturally I have a few questions..
-
As a traveler who will be living there for a year, would it be worth my time to rent a place of my own, rent Airbnb or live in hostels. Any other living suggestion is deffinetly welcome!
-
What is the typical cost of food for a decent diet?
-
How welcoming are the locals? I know in Canada sometimes groups can be very clicky, and other times people can be super judgemental and closed off. So i want to know how easy is it to make friends, and what are the best ways to go about making friends.
-
What city / town should i consider moving to? I like large communities, as i am a fairly social( yet semi-socially awkward) person. At the same time, I love nature and site seeing. Staying active and what not.
-
Jobs. Do people look down on foreigners "taking der jerbs". Or are they fairly open to it. Is there anything i need before being able to apply for a job, how abundant are these jobs, and are they livable wages.
-
Transportation. Should I get a vehicle? Or is it better to rely on transit and train/ taxi. Is the place generally small enough to get around with the good ole left foot right foot? Also, I have a Canadian drivers license, will that be sufficient?
-
What are the do's and don'ts in the New Zealand culture? Are people laid back or offended easily in general? What additudes should I expect as normal, instead of taking it personally?
-
Is there anything I should think of packing for just-in-case (get it?) Situation's? How about after the trip, what should I be mindful of? I am a new traveler so all advice is welcomed.
-
What do you fellas think of Canadians? Is there any low key bias I should be aware of?
-
What is the hospital system like? Say i get hurt, or get bit or stung by something I'm not familiar with in Canada, or i break something, what is the health care cost in hospitals?
-
Unfamiliar laws I should be mindful of?
-
Lastly, what traveling deals should I look for when it comes to getting there and back to Canada or maybe another country?
