South-east Asia recommendations.
I'm in the preliminary stages of planning a SEA trip, thinking of flying from Sydney (where I live) to Singapore, then travelling north through peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and possibly Myanmar. I'm fairly well accustomed to solo travel, (over a year combined backpacking time since June 2015 in three trips to Europe, New Zealand and North/Central/South America) so I've got the logistics under control. I'm mostly looking for recommendations in terms of destinations, activities, and timing in terms of peak season/off season etc (I'm in no rush to head off, I'd rather wait until the right time of year).
For destinations I like a mix of busy, vibrant cities and sleepy beach/rural towns, ideally alternating so I don't get sick of any one "speed". Too long in an urban environment and I find myself pining for more natural/rural surroundings, but also vice versa.
In terms of activities I'm always down to see the major tourist attractions, at least for the first day or two in a new place. I really enjoyed a number of hikes I did in Central/South America so I'd definitely be down for more of that, and I'd like to get PADI or SSI certified for diving as early as possible in this trip (Tioman Island? Wait until Phuket or Ko Tao?) so I can hit all of the amazing diving spots that will be along my route.
I brainstormed a bit of a rough route plan on Travellerspoint, but my plans are always 100% flexible, I'm not going to book any of it ahead of time. Any suggestions, sharing of experiences or information would be greatly appreciated :)
