±1 year to backpack through Latin America: Mexico to Argentina.
Gratefully seeking feedback, insight, convincing or maybe even dissuasion!!
I am a first year high school Spanish teacher with a Bachelors in Spanish and a Masters in teaching, just graduated from a top public university. I was originally planning to just travel through Central America for this upcoming summer (I live/work in the US) in between school terms. I not only want to sharpen my Spanish fluency but also let go of the life+work structure I've adapted for around a year. There are far too many important nuances and experiences I need to encounter in the Spanish-speaking world before I stand in front of U.S. students as an expert. I also have strong bonds with people in the U.S. that immigrated from Latin America.
So, the plan has rapidly evolved to encompassing all of Latin America. Ideally, I would fly out from LA to somewhere in Mexico to stay at a cheap eco-lodge, perhaps by volunteering in exchange for housing. I would also, most likely have a flight back to LA in place. From which location in Latin America is the question still up in the air at the moment.
From the ecolodge in Mexico, I'd begin living on the real real cheap, couch surfing, maybe Air BnB'ing, and camping! I have not travelled solo before. However, I lived in Costa Rica for two months last summer. Did a bit of weekend solo travelling while there. I am vegan with a small appetite and a high metabolism, so I'm not worried about food. I can live off of cheap staples like beans, nuts, rice, and fruit. I am also an [subjectively] attractive gay male, which frequently aids me in couch-surfing and subsistence pursuits.
I guess my specific question is open-ended, what are some good ways to subsist? I'm looking into volunteering at ecolodges and ecofarms, and am open to the prospect of getting a job teaching English in any country I find comfortable and worth a longer stay.
TL/DR:
-
±1 year of free time
-
Starting with a flight/drive to Mexico
-
Staying at ecolodges, couch surfing, camping
-
Volunteering for room+board
-
Professional fluency in Spanish, goal is to improve linguistic, cultural, and historical fluency
-
Most likely going to maintain Argentina as final destination, with flight back home from somewhere there
-
Very receptive to suggestions, modifications, protests, critiques, general feedback, advice, insight, etc
