The wife and I would like to spend part of the trip discovering the natural beauties of the US West Coast (Yosemite and all the rest). We'll leave at the beginning of May, and I was thinking of renting a camping van for the most "outdoor" parts of the trip.

Obvious advantages (as I see them) would be: - being able to rest whenever/wherever you want (I'm a bit scared of the motels you see in the movies); - having everything you need right there with you (e.g. a shower after a long day spent on a mountain); - etc.

But I also wonder if this idea is as practical/romantic as it is in my head. For example: do I have to find very specific parking spaces in order to park (and empty/refill with water) the camping van? And is it safe to spend the night out in the open?

Any opinion on the matter (not just on the points I've raised) are welcome.
