Photography equipment

I got into more serious photography about a year ago when I was underwhelmed with my cell phone photos of my travels. This year I decided I would take my equipment with me.

Here's what I brought: * DSLR body with 2 batteries

  • 18-135mm lens

  • 35mm prime lens

  • 10-17mm fisheye

  • 2 film cameras (one for color and one for B&W, or one for low ISO and other for high ISO)

  • 28mm prime lens for one film camera

Honestly, lugging this stuff around is a PAIN. I end up leaving half of it at the hostel. I never used the 35mm prime because switching lenses is a pain (interesting because this is my most used lens at home). The fisheye I've used maybe 5 times when the 18-135 wasn't wide enough. And I've only used both film cameras simultaneously one time. It's much easier to just shoot one roll one day, and a different roll the next. Next time, I will bring:

  • DSLR with 18-135mm zoom and two batteries. Weather resistant is a must. It snowed and rained some days and if I didn't have WR lens/body, I would have been screwed. Honestly something like the Sigma 18-35 might even be a good option as I seem to take most photos in the 18, 24, and 35mm ranges. Having a 35mm prime I think would be too limiting, although might be doable if you bring a wide angle lens with it.

  • One film camera with a 50mm prime lens. Shooting film is more of a novelty for me, so I can work my shots around being limited to only 50mm.

I'm writing this up for people who are considering bringing a bunch of lenses and accessories. While it's fairly easy to carry that stuff at home, it's a pain lugging it around on trains and planes.
