Bad Hostel Experience
Location: K-Guesthouse Myeondong 3 - Seoul, South Korea
I had a reserveration for a 4 night stay with this establishment. When my gf and I got back to my room late at night, I noticed a lot of small bugs on the concrete portion of the room and under the cabinet located next to the door. Front desk is closed at this time so I killed as much as I could and went to sleep. There's a step after concrete so I wasn't too worried about them getting into the rest of the room. Next morning, I addressed the issue with staff. I showed him pictures and videos of the bugs. He apologized and called his manager and gave me two options. 1) bug spray my room and 2) move me to another room, I chose the latter. Before moving in, I inspected the room. The room was located on the 5th floor in front of the elevator, the new room was located on the 6th floor at the end of the hallway. When I inspected the room, there was the exact same bugs on the concrete portion in the very front of the room. These bugs were crawling in and out of the cabinet located next to the door. I addressed this issue with the staff, he went to the room to verify the bugs and again apologized. He called his manager again and gave me the same 2 options as before. I can move to another room or they will bug spray the room and hopefully the bugs will go away. I discussed this with my gf and she did not want to stay in a hostel with a bug infestation. As we were packing up, I noticed the same exact bugs on the wooden floor. They were crawling out of a hole next to the small vanity table and my suitcase was practically right next to it! I did a quick check of our bag and it's content, making sure none of the bugs got inside and left. I checked out despite only staying one night and I was charged the entire four night stay. There was never any talk about a refund. The staff was powerless to do anything, had limited english understanding, and there was no manager on the premises. Seems like this issue isn't important enough for the manager to come out as the staff would repeatedly call the manager for advice. My gf stormed out of the place and started walking away. She was pretty upset about how lightly the staff was treating this and on top of it, all this bug issue made us late for exploration of Korea.
I know it's my fault for leaving without discussing a refund but I didn't have the time to wait for a manager to arrive on location. And with an upset gf walking away, I didn't want to add oil to the fire. I emailed them requesting a refund on good faith. That I shouldn't be charged for the entire stay as their facility is unsanitary and infested with bugs. Management refused because they believe "they did the best they could do to fix the problem". Which was bug spray and move me to a 3rd room (hopefully with no bugs in that one).
I'm just extremely disappointed and appalled at how lightly they are addressing this issue. Bug spray is a temporary fix. Once the spray's effectiveness has wore off, the bugs will come back. Which means future customers will have these issues. I understand there are odorless bug spray but in case they are using one that smells, I do not want to stay in a room smelling like bug spray and breathing in those fumes. Two rooms on different floors have bugs. On top of that, they are crawling inside the walls so that lead me to believe there is a high possibility that bugs are in other rooms as well. The whole facility may have bugs within those walls, waiting to crawl out of a hole in the rooms. These bugs can crawl into customer's luggages, clothes, bed, etc. They may end up bringing them onto the plane or back to their home country. This is a health and safety hazard. I know these bugs may be harmless and I may be blowing this out of proportion but no one should be treated like this. Judging from their actions, it seems like they think it's okay for customers to sleep in rooms that are infested with bugs and care even less if something happens to their customers because of these bugs. TLDR: Rooms are infested with bugs. Hostel think it's okay for guest to stay in theses rooms as long as they bug spray it. I checked out and emailed them to request a refund. Management refuses refund.
Video:
There was a a lot more bugs than whats on the video. As soon as I turned on the light, they quickly went underneath the cabinet.
