Any Advice for A Novice
So Friday afternoon, my Wife, 3 year old son, and I will be embarking on our longest road trip to date. We live in SE Virginia and we'll be heading to New Orleans for the holidays. I've got a few concerns and I was hoping some of the pros could offer some helpful advice.
So Google Maps has us completing the trip in about 15 hours. Now, we'll be leaving around noon but we'll both be up at 6 that morning as we have to work a half-day that day. My Wife is more than willing to share the driving, but once the sun goes down, my control-freak side forces me to take over. My control-freak side also leaves me unable to sleep in the car when I'm not driving. All things considered, I'm looking for a way to stave off getting tired/keeping up my stamina.
My son is great on car rides. On other trips, we usually get him in his PJ's when we stop for gas/food and he ends up passing out. We also have a DVD entertainment package in the van. My concern is, do we need to be weary of blood clots at his age? I know on long-haul trips they suggest stretching as much as possible to avoid this, but if we don't have to wake him to get him walking around, I'd prefer not to.
Are there any resources other than Google Maps that would provide a better/faster route? I know we'll be contending with a lot of holiday traffic and the route suggested by Google has us driving right through some very big cities, such as Atlanta.
Any other general tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.
