[Advice] Plan on Vandwelling from March-July while driving the perimeter of the U.S. Looking for general guidance.
Hey roadtrippers,
I am taking some time away from life in-between relocating from late winter-mid summer. I decided to jump in my mom's old Yukon and see the country. My intention is to park around national forests so I can just wake up and go hiking before eventually being able to trail-run, longboard, or rock climb. I'm starting in FL, heading West to Los Angeles; then North to Seattle to camp at Olympia, then East to VT (not sure if I'm going to go up through Canada or drop a little south into CO); then back south to FL. I think 4-5 months is a reasonable amount of time for a trip like this but I've never done something this long. I've got a number of friends and family along the way too, so I'll be swapping between national forests and cities so I can re-up on supplies.
I haven't started the significant planning yet but I wanted to hear some feedback on things I needed to keep myself aware of as I start planning that I may be completely oblivious to right now.
Food: I plan on bringing a lot of dry stuff like dates, figs, apricots, granola, nuts, apples, peanut butter, hard cheeses, beans, bags of soup. I've got a Costco card so any suggestions for a healthy list would be helpful.
Clothes: I've got some good winter gear I'll wear as shells (Carhartt duck pants and quilted overalls, for example) while I rotate my long-johns underneath. I've got a Balaclava, Kamik hiking boots, some warm socks and gloves.
Car: a 10-yr old Yukon (reg. size) that has been taken in within the past month. The maintenance guy said there was nothing significantly wrong with it but to keep an eye on the oil. I've got a tri-fold climbing mat (crash pad) that is a bit bigger than me to sleep on. I'll also have a nice flannel sleeping back and, when it gets warmer, I've got my camping hammock.
Tools: I plan on bringing things like a collapsible/multi-kit shovel, compass, filter, camping stove, hatchet, magnesium fire-starter.
Questions:
Has anyone had experiences with unfriendly people/police/animals?
Was there any difficulty finding places to sleep when not in nat'l forests? I'm expecting to crash in Walmart parking lots when visiting cities. I'm under the impression they're cool with that?
Are solar chargers worth investing in?
Thanks in advance.
