Good place to start South East Asia trip?

Caught the travel bug. I just started looking into a backpacking trip through South East Asia for my second 'big' backpacking trip and was wondering where are some good places to start? I'm looking to spend 3-5 months, will start in Feb or March, and hopefully will have $4k-$6k in the bank by then. I've already been to the Philippines, but only been to Cebu to visit my mom's side of the family so I'm definitely open to checking out more of my mother's country. Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia are some places I want to check out. Also want to check out Nepal for some trekking (yeah I know it's a bit out of the way) so there's that, but can save it for another time. Where's a good place to start? Bangkok maybe?
