First solo travel SEA (SIN,MAL,THA,MYA)

Hi guys,

In a couple of weeks I will be flying to Singapore to begin my SEA adventure, which will last almost 4 weeks.

I've traveled to many places before, but always with a friend of mine--and always staying in (cheap/affordable) hotels.

I would like some feedbacks and suggestions on three main topics.

1. Itinerary I need a lot of suggestions here. Feel free to suggest new places AND especially to help me rearrange the order/method of transport etc.

  • Singapore (start and finish, can't be changed)
  • Malaysia:Kuala Lumpur & Penang
  • Thailand: Phang-nga, Bangkok, Pattaya City
  • Myanmar: Yangon, maybe Mandalay (opinions?)

I could maybe add Ho Chi Min via internal flight, to spend Christmas with friends there--but that's TBC. Cambodia & Laos may be nice as well (Laos better because no visa required for me), but don't want to add too much.

What do you think? Other places? Things to do?

I will most likely take at least two internal flights (Bangkok or wherever you suggest, to Yangon), and wherever to Singapore (one way, need to catch my flight back home at the end of the year).

2. Vaccinations & Diseases Today I got my vaccination shots and already spent a shitload of money--rabies, typhus, polio+tetanus, influenza, and emergency pills for malaria. $600 already gone and I'm not even done.

Anyways, it's a good investment I guess :D

I will also buy some insect repellent for the skin (already bought one to spray on clothes before packing): this one is a combination of DEET and Picardin, very effective apparently.

Questions:

  • Do I need a bed net?

  • How dangerous is this part of the world when it comes to different diseases (considering my vaccinations--and what you can't get a shot for).

  • Didn't get the Japanese Encephalitis shot--really expensive (would set me back more than $300 more) and the doctor (a specialist) advised against it because "extremely rare" and "you'll stay only a few days in Singapore anyways". Any personal experience?

I'm actually hypochondriac, so please don't mock me. I don't really do it on purpose...

Accommodation For the moment I've only booked a reasonably-priced hotel in central-ish Singapore, because that's where I will land (and depart from). Booked 5 nights but I will most likely spend only 4 there (but I can change the reservation for free--while I can't add nights at the same price, if rates increase). Anyways, mind that I like big cities AND I have friends living there to visit. I'll be spending maybe another night in SIN before flying back home.

For the other countries I'd like to wait and keep some flexility throughout the trip. Do you think it would be better to reserve already (in terms of price and availability wise)?
What about guest houses? Do you prefer those to hotels? Are they cheaper? Is there any website you would suggest?

I don't mind sharing the room with other people, but ideally I would prefer to have a private shower/toilet.

Other notes I don't really have a budget in mind. Money shouldn't be a big issue because of favorable exchange rates & because I already live in probably the most expensive city in the world--so let's say almost everything will be cheaper in SEA. By this I don't mean that I want to waste money or that I don't have a budget at all, I'm just saying that taking one more internal flight to save time (if you suggest so!) won't break the bank.

Thank you guys in advance for your help!

and most importantly if you are in SEA in December, drop me a message and maybe we can meet!
