23M, Looking for social hostels in North New Zealand - Whangarei, Paihia, Kerikeri, up toward Cape Reinga

Anyone have some suggestions? My friend in Auckland says there aren't as many hostels as you go further up towards Cape Reinga - more BnBs and the like.

I'd like to meet some other travelers. Would it be better to spend some more time in Auckland and then head up there with some other people?

My friend in Auckland has a friend going up to Whangarei, so I can get a ride up there with her today. I just want to figure out if this is the right move or if I should go up later?

I'll be coming back to Auckland for Chrismas.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
