Wrapped up 4 months traveling through Asia, want to share what I've learned. AMA!

Hello everyone!

Thanks in no small part to this sub, I recently finished up a 4-month solo trip through Asia. I had an absolutely incredible time, achieved a couple life-long dreams, and learned a TON. I’ve recently started my own travel site to share the wealth and talk about what I’ve learned in my travels, and to help others to travel solo, too.

I wanted to jot down a few of the big things I learned, and open the floor to any and all questions.

Tips:

  • Pack less than you think. I know it's a cliche, but seriously, you’re not gonna need that much. If you find you need something, you can always pick it up on the road.

  • It’s cheaper than you might expect. (Especially if you stick to a smart budget.) Even traveling to more expensive countries, I spent well under $40 per day on average.

  • Hostels in Asia are NICE. Seriously, I traveled through Western Europe a couple years back, and for the price you pay and the quality you find, I was very impressed.

  • Transport around some countries can be a pain, but generally it’s pretty easy to get around, especially with the advent of budget airlines. (I flew on AirAsia. A lot.)

  • I was worried that Visa problems would crop up (for reference, I have a US passport), but in the end I had no issues at all.

  • Hostel staff are the absolute best resource for information / recommendations / questions / everything else pretty much. Most are genuinely friendly and really interested in helping out travelers. Don’t be shy; ask them when you need help!

  • English was common throughout pretty much everywhere I went, but of course it always helps to learn key phrases in the local language. It’s a sign of respect, and the locals will appreciate the attempt.

  • Meeting people is incredibly easy. I’m generally a sociable guy but enjoy my alone time, too. The best part about traveling solo is that you get to decide what kind of mood you’re in and act accordingly – if you want to make friends, you can make friends; if you’d like some alone time, you can have that too.

  • If you have the chance, get certified in scuba diving. Seriously. Do it.

Just to give a quick sketch of my itinerary, I traveled from Thailand > Cambodia > Vietnam > Laos > Kuala Lumpur > Singapore > Hong Kong > Japan.

Like I said, this sub has been an awesome resource for me, and I’m happy to share more tips. Feel free to AMA!
