Unfortunate circumstances led me to travel for the first time in my life. I owe you all. Thank you sincerely!

Hi there /r/solotravel!

A few months back my wife unfortunately left me, and I went through the typical hardships of a divorce. I sat there being upset for a long long while, wondering where I went wrong. But then I came to a revelation; look at the brightness of the situation. I get to start living the dreams I had when I was younger. One of which is to travel outside of my country which I haven't ever done.

The problem was I couldn't really figure out anyone to go with and imagined the idea of travelling alone to be a lonely and pointless experience. This is when I found your sub. I started lurking a bit around here and let me tell you, you all have opened my eyes to the beauty of travel and how doing it alone isn't something to be ashamed of.

So I took the plunge. I bought a flight to Mexico City in early November, rented a car for 2 weeks, and booked Air BnB's in multiple destinations (Guanajuato being the one I'm most excited for).

For the first time since my divorce I feel actual happiness and excitement. I can't lie, I'm fairly nervous. But all of the wonderful posts I see here honestly made me want to do something for myself - which I haven't done in a LONG while.

So thank you /r/solotravel, thank you for helping me through the pain by opening my eyes to the true beauty of life. Sorry for the rant, just wanted to share my story.
