On the last 2 weeks of a 10 month solo travel in Europe and it's the best thing I've ever done
I've been reading some of the posts on here and thought I would add my own. I (25M, American) started in January by going on Birth Right to Israel (not my favorite thing, but hey it's a free trip), and then had a vague plan of a few places I wanted to visit in Central/Eastern Europe. I had been to a few places in Western Europe, and was more interested in less popular spots (as well as less expensive), so I started in Poland and now am 30 countries later, having been to every European country east/south of Germany (except for Belarus and Cyprus) as well as Turkey and the Caucasus. Aside from meeting a friend from home for a few days in Turkey and Georgia, I've been alone this whole time, and honestly I wouldn't want it any other way. I'm now posted up in Poland, staying with a Polish girl I met while traveling, and am going to Paris/Luxembourg/Belgium next week for the last leg of my trip before going home. My mom (and the Polish girl) are meeting me there, so this is the end of my solo travel portion, which is why I'm posting now. Most of the tips I would offer are pretty similar to what others have posted, but I'll add a few and am happy to answer and questions or give country/place suggestions on places I've been.
-as others have mentioned, if you're alone, you have to be more outgoing. Approach people at the hostel (and read reviews beforehand so you know what you're getting), at bars, free walking tours, Tinder, etc. People will sometimes approach you, but it's best not to wait for that. You will have more fun if you do!!
-Be spontaneous. When I was in Montenegro and this French guy I met at the hostel said he was driving to Albania the next day, I didn't hesitate to join him. "yes" attitude always wins
-Don't worry about language difficulties. I don't speak another language besides Spanish, which doesn't really help in this part of Europe, but I was able to pretty easily navigate countries with a relatively low English speaking populace. Learn a few words in the local language (if you're going to Ukraine/Russia or other countries using a cyrillic alphabet, learn to read it. It's not that hard), but almost always you will find someone who speaks enough to help you
-Be interested. Yes, solo traveling often involves partying etc, which I did plenty of, but I think its important to be interested in historical/cultural things in the country you visit otherwise the partying will get boring! A healthy mix is key
I'll add more if I think of them, but here's the list of countries I've visited: Israel, Palestine, Poland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Greece, Romania, Czechia, Moldova, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, UK, Denmark, Sweden
