Just booked a flight to SEA for my first two week solo trip. Looking for some insight on what countries are best for a first time trip!
Hi all, I've been lurking around here for about a year now and finally mustered up the courage to book a flight to Singapore on 12/5 and returning 12/19. I came across tickets from LAX for ~$400 roundtrip, and couldn't pass it up.
I've actually spent some time in Singapore already, and don't intend on spending more than 1 night there (if that). Instead I was thinking I'd just fly to some surrounding countries from there. I'm currently considering Thailand and Vietnam, specifically Bangkok & Hanoi, as those seem to be popular backpacking destinations here. I haven't booked anything yet, and I thought I'd run it past you guys before settling so quickly on that.
Here's a little about me: I'm a 27yo male from Los Angeles, just out of an almost 3 year relationship. I guess that's an important detail here because I've just always been in long term relationships since high school, and it's becoming more apparent as I get older how important it is to develop and be comfortable with who I am independent of a significant other. The other goal in doing this is to just expose myself to new environments/people and hopefully broaden my perspectives on the world. I'm not a first time traveller and I've been lucky to have been to many other countries across Europe and Asia throughout my life, but mostly in the context of a family trip, never solo.
I know that 2 weeks isn't a particularly long time, and I could probably spend it all in one place, but as it is my first time going, I'm hoping to visit at least two different countries. In addition to seeming backpacker friendly, Bangkok seems to also be a great place to just wander, eat and see old/cool things. From my understanding, Hanoi seems a little less hectic, and is a great hub for day trips to places like Halong Bay and Sapa. So those two seem to contrast in complimentary ways(?).
Anybody have any thoughts to offer on whether this seems like a good way to spend 2 weeks as a first timer? Any other places you think I should really consider? I've heard that Cambodia could be another good option. Think I could fit that in there? Any and all constructive tips/opinions are appreciated. Thank you guys!
