Any ideas of where to go for 10 days before going to Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai?

Hello all, I am on a 9 month trip right now, and I’ve just arrived to SEA and am in Bangkok until Saturday, the 14th. I want to be in Chiang Mai on the 26th for the cremation ceremony and on the 4th of November for another festival there.

I don’t want to stay in Bangkok (8 days is enough for now) and I don’t want to go to Chiang Rai until after Myanmar to take the boat to Laos. I don’t want to go south because I have friends meeting me here in February and we are going South.

Any ideas on where to have a good 10 days before heading to Chiang Mai?

EDIT: I’ll be doing Cambodia after Laos and Vietnam after Cambodia so I’m trying to stay within Thailand
