Travelling on the weekends during a language course in Europe

I'll be going to England in either march or may to do a 1-month language course. I'm paying with a mix of 5-years savings and indemnizations from work I'll recieve this year. I'm a huge history addict, from ancient all the way through modern, that's why I choose London, even considering it would be more expensive. I don't think I'll ever going to have the financial means to return, or, at least, it'll take me almost a decade, so I want to treat this trip as an once-in-my-lifetime event. But I also want to optimize things, and here's where my doubt comes:

I was planning on hitting 4 different places on the weekends: 4 days in Paris, 4 days in Rome, 3 days in Istanbul and 2 days in Athens. Berlin and Budapest/Vienna were my plan B, in case the air tickets were too prohibitive. But now I'm thinking if I'm crazy about this, and if I shouldn't just travel around the UK, instead. I have 9 places outside London I really want to know in the UK, and, from these 6, 3 would require a full day (York, Edinurgh and Cardiff) and 4 maybe I could hit on a desperate rush in the afternoon on a weekday (Dover, Portsmouth, Bath, St. Albans, Windsor and Oxford), but, if I had one or 2 weekends avaliable, I could do at least some of those with more ease, even helping me practice my english (which is, theoretically, the co-major goal of going).

If I chose to to this, Paris and Athens would be the chosen 2. Athens because it can be condensed in 2 days (all the Acropolis and the Archaeological Museum) and Paris because a) I can go on a cheap bus and b) I really want to hit the Invalides and Versailles. Berlin could also be here, but I found a hard time fitting in 3 days, considering I would feel incomplete not going to Sachsenhausen, but that's not the point. The point is: I'm not being a drama queen when I say it'll be very hard for me to go to Europe again. The costs are very prohibitive, on every aspect. Myabe I'll be able to go to either Lisbon or Madrid in the future, that's why I'm not including the Iberian Penisula, but anything east of Dublin will be hard. And I'll really regret if I had the chance to know Rome and the old Constantinople, but failed to do so. But, I'm also afraid of booking air tickets and then feel overwhelmed, or in the need of ditching a deeper knowledge of the UK or just making new friends. I'm absolutely confused, and any help would be great.

TL;DR: I'll do a language course in London next year, probably my first and last trip into Western Europe. Should I hit one capital per weekend or I'll be better travelling inside the UK?
