Traveling in the British Isles
Hello everyone. I am going on my first trip to Europe and my first solo trip this month. I am scheduled to land in London on Thursday September 21st. My plan is to stay in London for the night and then take a combination train and ferry trip to Dublin the next morning. I would like to spend 3-4 days in Dublin before moving on to Edinburgh for 2-3 days and then travel back to London where I will spend the rest of my time before flying back to the USA on Wednesday October 4th.
Other than my flight back to the US and tickets to an Arsenal match on Oct 1st I do not have any set plans. I hate to make any advance travel reservations as I would like my trip to flexible in case I want to spend extra time in any one location. My question is how much more expensive will it be to make plane/train/bus reservations only a day or two before departure? Looking at the rail prices for tickets tomorrow versus two weeks from now the price increase is only about 5 pounds which is an acceptable increase in my opinion.
The second question is about hostel availability. Will I have any trouble finding decent hostel accommodation only a day or two prior and for a reasonable cost?
I would just like general advice from someone who has done this trip before. Would you recommend purchasing everything in advance but losing flexibility or would you purchase as you go?
