Questions about my trip to Italy - phone, itinerary, etc.
Ok, lots of questions. My wife and I leave for Italy in 2 days. We are planning on backpacking so we don't have to drag roller bags, and deal with checked baggage. We have that part figured out. We have the basics of our itinerary set too, I just want to see if there are any recommended sites we are missing. We also are bringing our phones, we have 2 kids that will be home with the grandparents, so we want to make sure they can get in touch in an emergency, as well as just to talk with them.
On to the questions - start with the itinerary. We fly to Rome, plan on taking the train to Cinque Terre for a couple of days and hiking around there (we are staying in one of the cities, plan on hiking between the others to see them all). After that, we will take the train to Venice, stay there for a couple of days, then head back to Rome. In Rome, we plan on the Colosseum area one day, Vatican the next, anything else the third. We also will take a day trip to the Amalfi Coast either after the second day, or after the third, depending on how it's going.
Any places that you all think we should make sure to see? Recommendations in Cinque Terre, Venice, and Rome? Anything we should squeeze in? My wife is more about seeing the sites, less about art museums, so we don't have a lot of those planned. Venice will be mostly checking out the sites, Doge's Palace, San Marco Square. In Rome, anything we shouldn't miss on our anything else day?
Alright, last, phones. We have AT&T here in the USA. I've activated the international roaming feature, but that is $10/day that we use it. That's over $200 between the two phones for the the trip. I'm torn between just switching to T-Mobile so we get international roaming included, or letting my wife roam on her phone, and me pick up a local SIM. My wife's phone is locked to AT&T anyway, mine is unlocked. Two issues, switching is a hassle - we have 4 lines (wife, I, mother-in-law, niece) that we would have to switch, buying new phones for 2-3 of them and shipping one to our niece who would be out of a phone for a couple of days while she waits for it. It would cost more out of pocket and monthly as our AT&T plan is a ridiculously good deal due to a corporate discount. In my case, an international SIM would be ok, the kids have iPads, so we can FaceTime with them anyway. My wife would have her phone in case the school calls, or anything like that. Seems like an ok plan, but I'm open to ideas.
TLDR: Let me know if there are CAN'T MISS places I need to see, and if there are better ideas for phones than I mentioned. Thanks!!
