I'm traveling to the USA for a month at the end of the year. I consider having a phone with data to be pretty vital now, for checking email, timetables, communicating with AirBnB hosts, uber, etc. In Australia we have a wealth of cheap Chinese phones which work on our carriers with most frequencies supported, which we can purchase from eBay etc - I use one of these. The problem is that my phone doesn't support the common bands (frequencies) which are used in the US, very few Chinese phones do. I'm thinking it might be easier to just buy a cheap handset when I get there.

How much trouble is it to purchase and activate a handset in the US? Do you have to fill out paper work and provide ID, or do you just pick it up from the shelf, turn it on and go?
