Planning to drive from NC to CA with dog (speed run). Tips? Advice?
My boyfriend, my 6 month old pup, and I are making this 47+ hour trek from coast to coast. Rosie the puppy is awesome and pretty well behaved. We would love to make the trip longer and enjoy the places but we are trying to spend very little money and we have a job waiting for us near the north coast of CA. That said, we want to do a mix of tent camping and I have tentatively booked an air bnb cus it was only $38 and pet friendly.
Day 1- Wilmington, NC. - Golconda, IL to a campsite in the Shawnee national forrest [12 hours] Day 2- Need to be at in Denver by 10 pm (earlier would be better but I'm contacting the air bnb host to tell them the situation). [15 hours] Day 3- campground in Austin, NV [12 hours] Day 4- Eureka, CA [9 hours]
I understand that I should add at least an hour a day for stops, but is this realistic? I have done the trip from San Jose, to Crater Lake, OR to Tempe to Wilmington before. It was not planned and we spent a lot of money on hotels and didn't drive far enough sometimes before turning in so I think having set destinations could help. I chose this route cus I wanted to drive on a scenic highway and 80 seems less appealing. My dog has seat belt and microchip, and have a list of all her vaccinations. Plus toys, chews, a bed. We're trying to bring only what we need but not under pack.
The plan is to leave this coming Saturday very early, so I'm all over the place with planning and packing lol. Any relevant tips would be awesome.
