Our first trip to central France! S'il vous plaît, recommandez des activités à faire ou des endroits à voir!
My husband and I will be visiting the center of France, specifically the country around Clermont-Ferrand, in late October. We are not at all familiar with what the area is known for, or whether there will be much available transportation, so we're looking to learn before we go!
What are some great things we must see or do while we're there? What are the tourist traps? What things are off the beaten path but worth the effort to get there? What is useful to know about getting around or communicating with the locals?
I hear tell of a nearby volcanic park. Is Clermont-Ferrand worth a day or afternoon of wandering about? We tend to lean toward the geeky/nerdy side of travel interests, like art collections, libraries, architecture, guided historical tours, kitchy markets, and awesome small local restaurants. We aren't much for outdoor adventures beyond easy (and short...) strolls or hikes in well marked and well maintained spaces!
We will not be stopping in Paris except to hop off the plane to get on a train, so Paris recommendations will have to wait for another trip. ...probably many many years from now...
(Please pardon any horrifying errors in my title; I'm brushing off my school French, but still have some work to do before we go...)
Edit: Took out a bad attempt at embedding a Google Map. :-/
