Need help deciding between Cinque Terre and/or Venice for 9 night (8 day) Italy trip.
I am planning an Italy trip for late September (this month!) with the wife and am having a little trouble deciding on the itinerary.
Right now we have:
(Rome) Day 1: Arrive early in Rome around Noon, spend day in Rome.
(Rome) Day 2: Full day in Rome.
(Rome/Sorrento) Day 3: Head from Rome --> Sorrento in the morning, check out Sorrento most of the day.
(Sorrento/Positano) Day 4: Full-day trip to Positano (wake up and sleep in Sorrento).
(Sorrento/Florence) Day 5: Half day in Sorrento, head to Florence.
(Florence): Day 6: Full-day Florence
(Florence) Day 7: Full-day Florence
(Florence/Venice): Day 8: Florence --> Venice early, spend afternoon/night in Venice.
(Venice/Rome): Spend as long as we can in Venice, head back to Rome late to catch flight the next morning.
(Rome) Day 9: 1pm flight out of Rome
I talked with my friend who studied abroad in Italy and he suggested cutting Venice and adding Cinque Terre. As with all travel research, the problem I am having is that I can find equal amounts of "You absolutely MUST see Venice/Cinque Terre" and "Eh, Venice/Cinque Terre was not worth it, skip it."
My question is: should we consider
a) Cutting Venice for CT (Day 8: Head to CT early, stay the night, spend day 9 in CT and catch late train to Rome.)
b) Keep Venice, skip CT
c) Spend one of our Florence days (either day 6 or 7) on a day trip to CT and keep Venice.
Regardless of option I think we are still trying to do quite a lot in such a short amount of time, but it is so hard to optimize seeing as much as you can in such a limited time!
