Key West vacation and hurricane Irma
Hey everyone! So my girlfriend and I booked a trip to Key West from Philadelphia, set to fly out of PHL Friday morning (9/8). We land in Miami and have rented a car because we have never done the drive down to the Keys and thought it'd be a nice experience. We fly back home Tuesday (9/12).
As I'm sure you all know, hurricane Irma is looming and has a strong possibility of affecting Florida and even back home for us in Philadelphia shortly after.
We booked the flights and hotel through Expedia and we did purchase the ~$30 travel protection (though they didn't go into much detail what this covers).
This trip has been a giant source of excitement for us as we have both been working ourselves into the ground and could use the vacation, however I'm not willing to put either of us at risk in the path of a hurricane. We won't know for sure until probably late Tuesday/early Wednesday what the exact path will be but it seems like the Keys will more than likely be effected. Even if somehow it misses Florida and makes landfall further up the east coast, our return trip home could be delayed a few days which we can't afford work wise.
So with that said I have a few questions for anyone who may have experience with companies like Expedia. If we cancel- will they be understanding? I mean they can't expect us to fly into the path of a hurricane, right? If they allow us to cancel- do we get all the money back or are there fees? Will there problems with the airline, etc.
Sorry for the long post. I plan to call them tomorrow but would like to know what to expect going into the call. Thanks for any and all help!
