For those who have traveled to Meteora, how did you choose to get there?

I would really love to visit Meteora during my trip to Greece next month, but the 5-hour travel from Athens makes me hesitate -- especially since on the day of my return, I would have to go from Kalambaka to Larissa Station in Athens, and then to the airport to catch a flight for Santorini.

I know my options are basically the train, renting a car and driving it, and hiring a private transfer. At this point, I'm just wondering what others have done, and whether it felt like a strain on the trip.

For reference, I would spend two nights in Meteora/Kalambaka. Thanks in advance for any insight. :)
