Chinese visa after a name change
Hi,
My name changed earlier this year from my father's surname to my mother's side - as such (and because my passport expires next year) I will need a new U.S. passport.
About me: I am a dual U.S. / Estonian citizen, so I have two passports. Obviously with the 10 year visa duration recently granted to U.S. passport holders, I had to go with putting it on my American passport and not my Estonian passport. That, and a strange passport from a country many in China have never heard of would draw too much attention when traveling and slow me down.
My visa for China is NOT the standard tourist visa - rather, I have the FAMILY visa (if it makes any difference in all of this) as my wife and in-laws are all Chinese. It's good for 10 years and was just issued last year (not my first Chinese visa, so I'm fairly sure I can get another without that much trouble).
Specifics aside, my question is as follows:
Since my name changed and I am going to need a new U.S. passport, can I just show my family visa on my old passport along with proof of name change - since the visa is good until 2027 - OR do I have to pay the $200 something dollars to apply for another 10 year family visa?
I ask because it just seems silly to have to get a 10 year visa again only 1 year after it was issued.
Thanks!
