Cairo/Giza: General and safety advice sought preferably from solo travelers, but anyone with very recent experiences to the area.

So I am currently solo traveling the world. I'm writing this from Yangon, Myanmar after touring SE Asia for the past 2 months. Next month I will be traveling to a bunch of ancient archeological sites including, but not limited to, Rome, Athens, Petra, the Taj, and I desperately want to see the pyramids.

I'm a white American male, 38, blonde hair and blue eyes. I stand out in non-white cultures. That said, I'm also very culturally sensitive, generally aware, have traveled most of my life, and have learned phrases in about 13 languages on my trip so far (so I adapt to local customs and locals generally very much appreciate my efforts - I mean, I've been wearing a longyi in Myanmar ;) ).

All of that said, it strikes me that WikiTravel and other such sites that I generally trust for travel advice DO have various cautions about Cairo and specifically Giza at the moment.

I'm not dissuaded by them, necessarily, but they have certainly piqued my sense of judgment at least. Can anybody share recent experiences with me? Are the warnings predominantly overcautious fluff, or is there some merit to any of that?

If you have recently gone, how was getting around? Did people hassle/harass you beyond typical touting and jacking up prices a bit? Did you feel at risk ever? Was it easy to stay in places and find meals (I have sufficient financial resources - I'm very frugal, but can drop money if I need to)? Did you feel safe walking around - at night too?

For what it's worth I'll be driving across Morocco, then flying to Rome and Athens. Ideally I'll visit Cairo in between that and Amman, Jordan (to see Petra). Any subsequent thoughts on those destinations are welcome too, albeit I read mostly great things and am certainly not in the least worried about Europe.

The dates aren't entirely set in stone, but some time between October 13th and October 27th sounds most likely for my visit to Cairo/Giza. And probably just staying a few days - long enough to see what I want to see.

So many thanks in advance.
