Struggling with a plan for flexible accommodation for a rather long trip where we probably can't pre-arrange a schedule, tips and tricks?
We are doing a long move and making a road trip out of it, 5000 miles. Its going to be a big drive and ideally we would camp most of it, with the occasional hotel/motel.
Really we are not fussy, if we could drive until we get tired and pitch a tent in a field where we are breaking no laws and bothering no one and won't be harassed we would be happy to do that, pack up early and hit the road again.
Basically we don't like loitering at boring locations just because we have a stay scheduled at a particular place and are keeping a scheduled, but we also like being able to stay longer at an interesting place (for example if a camp site is first come first serve and the area has lots to do).
*Some apps like HotelTonight seem useful when we are in/near cities.
*I read something about legal camping on BLM land, is that a thing, how does that work?
*Are there any good resources about finding state and private parks that are first come first serve only? Even better if there is information on when these places typically fill up in the day.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
note: for obvious reasons we do not intend to stay in yellowstone without advanced planning (which we have not done).
