New Zealand WHV -- Tips on accommodation, saving?

tl;dr : Are there cheap accommodation options in Queenstown (or elsewhere in NZ) for extended stays? Is it possible to have some cash left over each paycheck for savings? What's up /r/solotravel? It's great to be here. I'm a 23 y/o male from the United States. I have an approved working holiday visa for New Zealand and am considering beginning my journey in January to February of next year (2018). After WWOOFing during the first part of my trip, I'd like to try and find some work in Queenstown beginning in winter (May-June). My question is this: do any of you have experience working in Queenstown, New Zealand (or other areas of the country) and, if so, what advice do you have on finding accommodation at an affordable rate? Rental prices in the area seem rather pricey and I want to know if there are inexpensive options for backpackers. Do ski lodges offer accommodation in addition to pay? Or, perhaps there is a way to find room mates with backpackers in the same situation?

Some more information since I have the main question out of the way. I should have $8,000-10,000 USD saved at my time of departure. I would like to try and spend 8-12 months in New Zealand, and then from there travel around the world for three to four more months before returning home. Upon arriving in New Zealand, I plan to see the country for some time before settling down on a farm with a WWOOFing contract. I'm hoping that while WWOOFing, my costs will be quite low. When late autumn rolls around, I'd like to find a proper job in the Queenstown area to recoup some of my money spent so that I'm not strapped for cash when my time in NZ is up (I'd guess my expenditures will be $3,000-4,000 by this point).

Is it reasonable expecting to save some cash while working in Queenstown? Or can I expect to be in the red every paycheck? Is having personal transportation a must for getting to and from work? Do any of you have some advice on saving money to further my travels after my WHV is up?

I used the search bar extensively and was not able to find the answer to this. Thank you all SO much for your help. -- edited for formatting
