PSA: AirBerlin Insolvency
Didn't see this posted anywhere else on here, but AirBerlin has recently filed for insolvency. It's a Oneworld partner and the second largest carrier in Germany, and as such, I wouldn't be surprised if a few people here are flying them sometime soon, especially with their position as a hybrid low-cost and full-service carrier model.
I'm sure other people can post more in-depth goings-on regarding bankruptcy proceedings but so far, some important things it would help to be aware of if you were considering booking with them soon:
*Most long-haul routes will be downsized, if not suspended, by mid-September (LAX, ORD, NYC, AUH, etc.)
*All AirBerlin Topbonus accounts are suspended. No redemptions or earnings are allowed, neither are cross-programme redemptions or earnings.
*The carrier has been given an emergency loan by the German government, but it isn't expected to hold out for long.
*Etihad Airways, their largest creditor, has pulled out of negotiations and would likely cut codesharing agreements.
