Post-Christmas mini-trip from Stuttgart: Alsace? Rhine?
My family of five (all adults) is spending Christmas in Stuttgart, and I'm now trying to devise a little trip for the following week.
Interests
Food and plenty of drink; quaint villages, charm, atmosphere, scenery; walks / short hikes, weather and conditions permitting; castles a plus; natural landscapes. The Christmas markets in Colmar run until 12/31, hence our preference to base there.
Current itinerary
12/22: Stuttgart + surrounds
12/23: Stuttgart – Black Forest day trip – Stuttgart
12/24: Stuttgart + surrounds
12/25: Stuttgart + surrounds
12/26: Stuttgart – detour to Ronchamp – Colmar
12/27: Colmar + surrounds
12/28: Colmar + surrounds
12/29: Colmar – [???]
12/30: [???]
12/31: [???]
1/1: [???] – Cologne – late train to Brussels
We will be driving throughout the trip and want to limit to the Baden-Württemberg + Alsace + Rhine/Mosel regions. My biggest question pertains to 12/29 – 1/1. I need to end up in Cologne, and basing somewhere in the Middle/Upper-Middle Rhine or Mosel in the interim seems to make the most geographic sense. Only priority is seeing Burg Eltz at some point (aware we'll just see the exterior due to seasonal closure), but a one-hour driving radius is fine.
Does anyone have suggestions based on prior experience? Any advice very welcome!
