Options for getting from Lyon to Normandy and the Cidre Route.
I'm putting together a trip to visit Switzerland and France in October with a travel mate. We'll arrive in Lyon (via train from Geneva) most likely on Wednesday October 11th and stay for two nights.
We'd then like to move on to Normandy, where we're thinking of 4 or 5 five nights. Not sure if we're going to stay in Bayeux or find someplace with 50 kilometers of the D-Day Beaches and drive ourselves. Looking at older posts here seeking information on a similar itinerary, it seems a given that we'll want to rent a car to give us some degrees of freedom.
So, I see a couple of options before us. We could rent a car from in or around Lyon and drive to Normandy. It looks feasible to cover that distance driving in a day, but I think we'd likely take one or two nights.
A second option might be to take a train from Lyon -> Paris -> Caen or Bayeux. From there, I imagine we'd be able to rent a car and drive to our final destination, wherever that might be -- we're still looking at options.
Has anyone made that drive before? Where did you stay (if you did) along the way? Any thoughts on one method/route over the other much appreciated.
Second question -- we'd like to visit the cider route. It seems doable in a day, depending on how many places we stop to sample the goods. However, I maintain a strict "don't do it" policy of ETOH + driving. This is most important to me to maintain in a foreign country. We'd like to hire someone to drive us. I can't seem to locate good information on this using some google-fu to try to help me. Does anyone have any experience with this?
