Oh, I needed that.
So I went to a lake in Tennessee for the weekend with 6 of my friends for what's become a yearly trip for some of us. Normally only 4 of us go. My buddy's dad owns some property on the lake and it's very relaxing and usually low-key and quiet. This year however, the extra guys were a little rowdy and it really killed my vibe. I'm trying to relax on the back of the boat and these fuckers are hooting and hollering and giving me shit for wanting to relax. So by the time Sunday rolled around I was so grateful that the one guy who was going to join me for the 2 hour drive to the eclipse's path of totality was no longer in my party.
That evening - after everyone had headed home - I took the kayak out and was able to wind down in silence. I did some drawing, reading and journaling without anyone asking why I wasn't doing shots. And more importantly, I finally slept through the night without being woken up by our large friend's snoring or some drunken asshole being obnoxious. Monday I awoke to the sun peeking over the mountains, steam coming off the lake and a large gaggle of Canadian Geese honking loudly as their wingbeats increased in intensity. It was magical.
I was basically on the road all day, which is fine by me so long as the right tunes are playing. I like driving. And since nobody was with me, I drove through countless valley roads in whatever direction I could to see if I could find the perfect eclipse viewing spot as far away from people as possible. That ended up being impossible but I parked next to this older couple from NW Tennessee and an older gentleman who drove down from Massachusetts. They had some stories, which is one of my favorite things about solo travel. I love talking to strangers.
The traffic sucked getting home but it's been a while since I've been as content with life as I was yesterday and Sunday evening. I guess I just wanted to share with you guys.
tl;dr: Friday and Saturday were spent in a less-than-stellar travel situation but Sunday and Monday I went solo and enjoyed myself so much more.
