Just booked my first solo travel trip...and facing criticism for it already!
Just booked the flights for my first solo trip to Thailand, super excited about visiting it!
The reaction?
Parents told me it's a disgusting country where I'll surely be scammed.
Grandparents told me by going there I'd be ruining my future, that there is nothing worthwhile to see there, and that it's filled with crooks. They told me I should honor them by canceling my international ticket.
Aunt chimed in saying I should not go solo anywhere and should go with someone.
Well fuck, this just emboldened me even more. I've been on trips before with other people and they've been filled with drama. I want to explore how the experience is when I'm on my own. I've read over and over again how Thailand is great for first-time backpackers, has fantastic food, and since it offers a diversity of environments (beaches, mountains, etc.), it seemed like a no-brainer.
Of course, they still think it's dangerous, disgusting, and that I'm going to regret going.
Anyone else had to deal with this?
