I recently booked a solo trip to Cancun for January, and since then, the U.S. State department has been issuing some fun new warnings about traveling to Mexico. I'm not a very experienced international traveler, so I have very little frame of reference. Curious to get some outside opinions, and I've already had family advise me to cancel outright....

What are your standards for whether a place is "safe" to travel to? Do state department warnings play into that at all?
