Itinerary for a RTW trip. Thoughts?
So I’m in the very early stages of planning a year long -give or take- round the world trip. I'll be saving for this over the next year or so. My budget will be around £16000, staying in hostels, travelling as cheaply as possible, with some splurges here and there for excursions like the Inca trail, Trans-Mongolian, lost city trek etc.
Plan - fly from Belfast to Brussels, visit Bruges and Ghent. Train to various cities in Europe. Rough plan goes Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Bucharest (maybe hit up Transylvania). I expect the European part to take 4-6 weeks.
At this point maybe go into Ukraine over land then fly to St Petersburg or just fly straight to St Petersburg from Romania?
St Petersburg onto Moscow. From Moscow take the trans-Mongolian stopping off at places like Lake Baikal, Mongolia (see the Steppe land) and onto Beijing. The trans-Mongolian should take about 2-3 weeks with stops included.
From Beijing(great wall, forbidden city etc), either fly to Shanghai or try see some towns and cities in between. This China part is all up in the air. China could be a 1-2 months, again very unsure of how to traverse this part.
Make my way to SEA, into either Hanoi(makes sense from China) or fly into Bangkok. Then travel through-out SEA Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos. SEA could be around 3 months.
After SEA, I am considering flying to Australia and maybe backpacking down the east-coast. I am considering skipping Australia though as it could really punch a hole in my budget.
After this onto South America. My idea is to do Peru. The inca-trek to Machu Picchu is a must. I am also interested in an Amazon Jungle trek too. Bolivia and Columbia also seem very interesting, the lost city trek in Colombia for example. I would expect to spend 2-3 months in SA. I would like to finish the trip in New York and fly back to Belfast. This is a little impractical having to fly to New York and a very expensive flight I imagine but finishing the trip in NY seems fun, if a bit cliched, but sure. Wall of text.. Thoughts, criticisms, suggestions for places to go, things to do. Cheers.
