I am traveling to China on business at the end of September for a bit more than a week. I have a list of questions about what I can and cannot do while there.
I will be traveling to Beijing China on and around the third week in September. I will be staying at a hotel, and I will be supporting a business conference. I will spend lots of time on site at whatever conference center we are going to inhabit, but I don't know how to act the rest of the time. I have a list of questions. I do not speak Chinese at all.
-
how are Internet connections at hotels? Are the speeds generally high enough to allow streaming video? Netflix? My home Plex server?
-
is it legal for me to use a VPN to access my home computer from China?
-
what are the best ways to have a FaceTime video chat with my family while I am gone?
-
from what I understand, I should not drink the water. Should I avoid water completely? Including rinsed salads and other cold things prepared with water? Should I stick to bottled drinks? Which ones are safe? What about coffee or alcohol?
-
are there safe bars or clubs to go to in the evenings?
-
how should an American conduct themselves while in a public setting? What should I be sensitive about and what topics are off-limits? Are there any social conventions that I should obey or at least understand?
-
should I prepare for the pollution levels in anyway? I am not particularly sensitive or allergic to anything.
